English and Welsh Wines - Wine Styles

Many different grape varieties are used to produce the wines in England and Wales, either as a single varietal or blends with flavors ranging from crisp, aromatic to fresh and fruity wines.

  • Sparkling Wines
Sparkling wines are by far the most popular English wines and Welsh wines available in the UK today and the biggest growth sector. All English and Welsh sparkling wines are produced by the traditional method – the same used for Champagne. The wines are mainly white but rosé and red sparklers are now produced.
  • Still White Wines
Most English and Welsh wine styles are still white wines ranging from dry to medium in style. The current trend of the wines is for dry, but wines with some sweetness to balance the natural crisp acidity and lower alcohols, produced by the English climate, make a delicious drink.
  • Rosé Wines
An increasingly popular style the world over and England and Wales are no exception. The UK wines are mainly just off dry in style and perfect for summer.
  • Red Wines
Only 12% of wine production in England and Wales is red. The wines are light, elegant and fruity in style.
  • Dessert Wines
Very little sweet wines are made. Those wines produced are not heavy or cloying but have a delicate balance between luscious fruit, sweetness and cleansing acidity.
