The true origins of Halloween are as shrouded in mystery and all that we do know about a British or Halloween is that it falls on the eve of a major festival in the Catholic calendar - All Saints Day - and is also the eve of the pagan Celtic festival of Samhain, though the festival of Samhain does seem to have been gobbled up by Halloween but according to About.com's Guide to Ireland, Bernd Biege, an Irish Samhain is still very much in evidence.

Despite Halloween now being a full-on commercial enterprise, it is still an evening fun, especially for children as they don creepy costumes and carry carefully carved lanterns on their "Trick-or-Treating" escapades around the neighbourhood. October the 31st is generally a cold and damp time of year and Halloween recipes call for food that is nourishing, warm, and (for fun) ever so sweet.
