There's a lot in a name, and if you want to sell a dish or recipe to someone, what helps is if the dish sounds appealing and creates a sense of what to expect; apple pie, treacle sponge, rich fruit cake .... etc.
For some reason, British and Irish dishes do not always follow this rule, can you guess what a Singin' Hinny is? Any ideas on Laver Cakes? Both are, in fact, quite delicious but there is no clue in the title.
Many of these weird and wonderful names for British and Irish foods, are ones handed down over the centuries. Some, (Singing Hinny is a good example) come from a local dialect, while others simply are, well - errrr - imaginative.
Here are 40 of the weirdest sounding cakes, puddings and biscuits out there. I am coming across them all the time, so expect the list to keep growing. And, if you can think of any, I have missed, please let me know.
