This week's Meat Free Monday recipe is in honour of Elizabeth David, one of Britain's most famous food writers. Gratin Dauphinois is not a traditional British food but a favourite nonetheless. Eat it with seasonal vegetables, I even enjoy it on its own with a loaf of crusty bread.

Looks yummy. I have Elizabeth David’s book on Italian cooking, but not this one that you reference.
Off-topic a bit but I’m wondering where and when this new trend for something called “Meatless Monday” came from?
Being a Catholic, I don’t eat meat on Fridays. Used to be pretty universal, at least among us Catholics. Ah well, I can take your ideas and transfer them to Friday myself! I was just curious since I see that phrase on many cooking sites. News to me. FRIDAY is the day without meat.
