One of the traditional foods for Halloween in Ireland is the famous, fruit studded yeast bread of Barm Brack which traditionally contained charms hidden within the bread. On Halloween, everyone - especially the young unmarried girls - would choose their piece of bread with care as finding a ring meant finding true love and marrying; a thimble meant sadly you would never marry; a rag predicted poverty and a coin you would be rich.
Today the bread is available commercially and the only charm you will find is the ring, but if you want to continue the traditions, you can make your own bread, it is actually quite easy as you can see in the recipe below. If you want to add charms, make sure you wrap carefully in greaseproof paper, and use charms that will at least be visible, don't want anyone swallowing them!
